Chapter 01
What Rockford's clay does to a wall or a paver run
Northern Illinois clay holds water. It swells when it's wet and it locks up hard when it freezes, and a wall or a paver base that wasn't built to move with that cycle shows it within a few winters. A retaining wall built without drainage behind it leans or bows outward because the clay is pushing wet weight against the back face with nowhere for that water to go.
A paver patio, walk or driveway shows the same problem differently: pavers heave at the edges, individual stones sink, and the sand joints wash out where water is running across the surface instead of through it. None of that is a materials problem. It's a base and drainage problem, and it's the first thing we look at on every property in Rockford, whether the job is a new build or a repair.

How we work
We start by walking the grade with you and figuring out where the water is actually going now, and where it needs to go instead. From there it's base preparation and compaction, then drainage behind the wall before a single course goes in, then the coursing itself, then edge restraint on a paver run so the field can't creep sideways over time. Curves get cut to the curve rather than forced square against it, which is part of why the Rockford College plaza still sits flat around its sundial monument.

Chapter 03
What happens if it's skipped, and how to tell the work is holding
Skip the drainage and compaction step and the visible failure shows up later, not sooner. A wall that leans a little this year leans more next year. A driveway with a soft base looks fine until the first hard freeze finds the weak spot. The work that's done right shows the opposite pattern: it looks the same in year five as it did the week it was finished, joints tight, coursing straight, no low spots holding water after rain.
